Work has begun to top about 100 trees on land owned by the Harmac pulp mill near the Nanaimo River Hatchery, to create better sightlines for pilots landing and taking off at the nearby Nanaimo Airport.

Harmac president Levi Sampson said a number of rotten trees that threaten to fall on power and water lines in the area will also come down.

"This is not a major project and we're planning on replanting any trees that we have to take down," he said.

"Our plans shouldn't impact the hatchery in any way. We have a long-standing relationship with the hatchery that we value."
